Amid the devastation from two of Colorado鈥檚 largest wildfires in history, recovery efforts are emerging. They're the beginning of what experts say is a complex, yearslong process.

For the second year in a row, Rocky Mountain National Park will begin limiting visitor access this week in a bid to control growing summer crowds that are damaging the park鈥檚 landscape.

As more Americans get vaccinated, they're finally preparing for long-delayed vacations. But if they want to visit some big-name national parks in the West, they may need a reservation.

Many areas of Rocky Mountain National Park reopened Friday after being closed for two weeks after the East Troublesome Fire spread into the park.

Officials are tracking the explosive growth of the East Troublesome Fire on both sides of the Continental Divide and into the 鈥渃rown jewel鈥� of Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park. As flames burned on its eastern side, near the town of Estes Park, the western side was the main area of focus. The fire exploded to 188,000 acres as of Friday afternoon, making it the second-largest wildfire in state history.

Elk bugling is one of the classic sounds of autumn in the Colorado mountains. It鈥檚 part of an elaborate annual ritual called the elk rut 鈥� the sound of elk bulls cruising for a date. Many nature enthusiasts head into the mountains during the elk rut to catch a glimpse of the spectacle. September is high elk rut season, which coincides with the autumn equinox. Colorado Parks and Wildlife鈥檚 big game manager, Andy Holland, joined Colorado Edition to talk all things elk rut.

Tuesday marks the 104th birthday of the National Park Service. And in celebration of that birthday, KUNC鈥檚 Colorado Edition spoke with the superintendent of one of Colorado鈥檚 four national parks, Darla Sidles from Rocky Mountain National Park.
