A new report examining gun safety across the country shows that levels in the Mountain West region vary widely.

Two Colorado gun control laws taking effect will require that firearm buyers wait three days before receiving their weapon and open up the gun industry to some legal liability. The laws take effect Sunday and come as violent crime and mass shootings surge nationwide.

A federal judge has blocked Colorado from enforcing a new law raising the age to purchase a gun from 18 to 21. U.S. District Judge Philip Brimmer issued a preliminary injuction regarding the law Monday following a legal challenge by a gun rights group.

The proposals include strengthening red flag laws, raising the firearm purchasing age to 21, opening the gun industry up to legal liability and installing a three-day waiting period after buying a gun. A fifth bill that would ban semi-automatic firearms faces slim odds.

In El Paso County, where five people were killed in a mass shooting at a nightclub in November, officials have filed relatively few emergency petitions to temporarily remove a person鈥檚 guns, with scant approvals.

鈥淭here鈥檚 so much on the table, probably over 20 things we could do in Colorado to address gun violence, and it鈥檚 going to be sorting out what is going to be the most effective and realizable,鈥� said Eileen McCarron, the president of Colorado Ceasefire.

It鈥檚 obvious that gun owners and non-gun owners often disagree on gun policy, but recent Pew Research surveys show they share some opinions, too.
