The suspect in a mass shooting at a Colorado Springs gay nightclub is expected to strike a plea deal to state murder and hate charges that would ensure at least a life sentence for the attack that killed five people and wounded 17.

Legal notices obtained by The Denver Post on Monday say 11 survivors and relatives of those killed notified the El Paso County Sheriff's Office last month that they intended to file lawsuits over the failure to obtain a red flag order against Anderson Aldrich.

The attack came on on the eve of an annual day of remembrance for transgender people lost to violence. According to defense lawyers, Aldrich is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns.
