Weekend Audition: The Warmth of Siberia & The Honoring of the Green

www.antjeduvekot.com

ew Siberia is the latest gem by Boston-area singer/songwriter , and it is a beauty. Consisting of fresh, heartfelt, and intelligent songs with delightful melodies delicately stitched together like an unpretentious Venetian lace.

Akin to Duvekot’s last album, The Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer, New Siberia was produced by song master , who also once again assisted with his guitar work and harmony vocals. This work is genuine, understated, and lush — a delightful painting rendered with honest strength and fragility. The contributors to campaign who funded this album should be beaming with radiance.

To honor Saint Patrick’s Day, what better to share than the music of , son of folk singer .  Long-time member of , Makem was weaned on the music of Ireland, and then spent the rest of his life sharing it with the world.  Initially he wanted to be an actor, and left his home for New York City, but the pubs of Greenwich Village are where he landed , sharing his stories, poems and music on stage.  Makem passed on due to lung cancer on August 1st, 2007, but through his life, he gave the gift of himself—his heart, love of Ireland and his immense talent—a gift that will never die.

Tommy Makem's Four Green Fields.  When I heard Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers do this song at Boettcher Concert Hall years ago, there was silence at its conclusion.  Then the hall erupted in cheers and a standing ovation.  The memory still gives me chills...

Though the majority of my radio experience has been in the commercial sector (from Colorado to Utah to Alaska), my radio was always tuned to the public station... I am an NPR junkie. I was blessed to work with some truly amazing and creative people in radio since my first professional job in the industry during my freshman year in college. That blessing has continued by being part of the family of one of the most incredible radio stations (and staff) in the country - KUNC.
