Michael Lyle

Morning Edition Host, Reporter

Email: michael.lyle@kunc.org

I serve as the afternoon host for KUNC’s Morning Editing. My job is to keep our listeners across Northern Colorado informed on the day’s top stories from around the communities we serve. On occasion, I switch roles and hit the streets of northern Colorado digging up human interest stories or covering a major event that’s taking place in our listening area.

Public media audiences are more than just passive listeners: they are engaged, critical thinkers, and care deeply about what happens in their community. That’s what I love about this job. They turn to us for the quality, unbiased journalistic approach they expect on a daily basis.

Before coming thousands of miles to Colorado, I worked as the Connecticut statewide reporter for NPR affiliate WSHU Public Radio in Fairfield, Connecticut and as the host for “Weekend Edition” on Saturdays and Sundays for New England Public Media in Springfield, Massachusetts. In addition, I was a weekend news anchor at WTIC-AM 1080 in Hartford, Connecticut and served as an Adjunct Professor at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.

I am a four-time recipient of the Connecticut AP Broadcasters Association award and a two-time recipient of the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists Award. I’m also a long-time member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

Education-wise, I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the Cathy Hughes School of Communications at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and a Master's degree in Journalism from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.

When I’m not at work, I can usually be found playing video games, enjoying a concert and the great outdoors across the Rocky Mountains, playing some pick-up basketball or enjoying sporting events from all the major college and professional teams in the state. Full disclosure: college basketball is my forte. I get excited whenever March rolls around. It’s the best time of the year as far as sports goes in my opinion!

There’s a debate in Fort Collins over whether a tax increase could keep Poudre School District from closing schools. Resident Jeff Lindquist, also a former chief financial officer for a suburban Denver school district, pitched the idea to the PSD Board of Education in April. The district would have to ask voters about the proposed measure in this November's ballot. The Coloradoan's Kelly Lyell joined KUNC's Michael Lyle, Jr. to get more information.

The state's Democratic majority passed reforms to help renters and several bills to spur housing development during the 2024 legislative session. One of those reforms requires local governments along the Front Range to zone for more apartments and townhomes near transit. The Colorado Sun editor Larry Ryckman joined KUNC's Michael Lyle, Jr. to get more on this story.

This past year at Colorado ski resorts at least 14 people died on the slopes. The Colorado Sun Team Editor David Krause joined KUNC's Michael Lyle, Jr. to share the data he gathered while reporting this story.

A controversial Colorado law states if a child protection caseworker gets caught falsifying records or lying about checking on children in one county, that person can still get a job in another county. The law further states that a new employer does not have to know about past bad behavior if there is no criminal case against that individual. Some childcare advocates are asking for a change. The Colorado Sun reporter Jennifer Brown joined KUNC's Michael Lyle, Jr. to discuss her story.

A day services center for those experiencing homelessness is set to open in Boulder as soon as next month. The center will operate out of the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. It’s been a priority for the Boulder City Council to establish a space where Boulder’s unhoused population can get access to resources during the day. Boulder Reporting Lab reporter John Herrick joined KUNC's Michael Lyle, Jr. to get more on this story.

The Colorado Air Pollution Control Division has missed its EPA deadline to rewrite permits for a Weld County oil and gas complex. A non-profit environmental group is threatening to sue the agency as a result. It contends the EPA and state regulators have failed to act quickly on the issue. The Colorado Sun editor David Krause joined KUNC's Michael Lyle, Jr. to get more on this story.

Officials in Nederland recently voted to repeal the 2021 "Rights of Nature Resolution," which also appears to mean the end of the two "guardian" positions that were created and filled in January. Clean water advocates argue the "Rights of Nature Resolution" is protecting local rivers and they say changing course could be detrimental. The Colorado Sun editor Lance Benzel joined KUNC's Michael Lyle, Jr. to get more on this story.

A plan in Fort Collins to build 140 condos on land north of Odell Brewing Company has resurfaced. The Tapestry development has gone through several years of planning and neighborhood meetings. It would be developed on 12 acres donated by the brewery's founders. Tapestry developer Hartford Homes said the project is intended to serve the "missing middle." Coloradoan Associate Editor Sarah Kyle joined KUNC's Michael Lyle, Jr. to break it down.

Democratic state lawmakers struck a deal with Gov. Jared Polis earlier this week that could make big changes to how TABOR, or the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, is managed. The agreement protects two pending bills that would create a new tax write-off for families and expand the state credit for low-income earners. The Colorado Sun editor David Krause joined KUNC's Michael Lyle, Jr. to get more on this story.
