Weekend snowfall and colder temperatures this past weekend helped fire crews get a handle on the Fern Lake Fire, which is currently reported at 3,498 acres and 88 percent containment.
Fire managers expect the 4 to 6 inches of snow that fell over the fire area will keep the blaze from spreading further, although it鈥檚 likely to continue smoldering for the next few weeks.
Meanwhile all evacuation orders have been lifted. The fire, which has been burning in since Oct. 9, has destroyed one cabin. The cause remains under investigation, though officials believe it was sparked by an escaped campfire.
