The US Postal Service Thursday which of the they’ll be closing between this August and February of 2013. All six of Colorado's locations have been spared from the first round of cuts.
Spokesman David Rupert says it's only a matter of time though before Colorado experiences closures.
As the postal service continues to struggle financially, Rupert says consolidating mail processing centers is the next necessary step. He says the closures will save the postal service $1.2 billion annually.
“Mail Volume has been decreasing since 2006. We built all this capacity for mail sorting operations. This is the back room and the machines and networks and transportation. In order to adapt to what we have today and in the future we are reducing a number of those mail processing plants.”
The US Postal Service had to close four of Colorado's six mail processing centers.
Rupert says the facilities in Durango, Alamosa, Salida and Colorado Springs will likely be included in the postal service's .
This would leave only the mail processing centers in Denver and Grand Junction open. Rupert says the closures will affect about 250 Colorado-based employees.
