Denver鈥檚 Western Heritage on Display With Annual Stock Show Parade

National Western Stock Show

The kicked off Thursday afternoon with horses, wagons, and a longhorn cattle drive through downtown Denver. Dubbed the 鈥淪uper Bowl鈥 of stock shows, the annual two-week event features rodeos, horse competitions, and events like sheep shearing and dog agility contests.

Organizers had considered moving the event to new facilities away from the city鈥檚 historic stockyards, which are now surrounded by homes and businesses. But despite a $100 million price tag for maintenance, the 107-year-old event is staying in Denver.

The National Western Stock Show opens Saturday, and runs through January 27th.

As the host of KUNC鈥檚 new program and podcast In the NoCo, I work closely with our producers and reporters to bring context and diverse perspectives to the important issues of the day. Northern Colorado is such a diverse and growing region, brimming with history, culture, music, education, civic engagement, and amazing outdoor recreation. I love finding the stories and voices that reflect what makes NoCo such an extraordinary place to live.
