The U.S. Postal Service has voluntarily agreed to delay the closing of 252 mail processing centers and 3,700 local post offices until mid-May.
The news comes after Colorado Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet鈥攁long with 16 other Senate Democrats鈥 last week calling for the hold.
鈥淭his is such a vital function. Everyone ought to have a chance to weigh in,鈥 said Sen. Udall. 鈥淭here was clearly a sense that we hadn鈥檛 exhausted all the possibilities and all the future ways in which the postal service could thrive.鈥
Udall said the next step is for Congress to examine more creative ways for the post office to operate in the 21st century.
The USPS is forecast to lose a record $14.1 billion next year. In addition to 67 Colorado post offices, the agency is considering closing four out of six mail processing centers across the state.
