Corrections officers were among the second group to get early access to coronavirus vaccines late last year. Experts are mixed on how well monetary vaccine incentives actually work. In the two months since CDOC鈥檚 bonus was introduced, vaccinations for staff who regularly work in the correctional facilities only increased about 15%, remaining just over half in total.

Correctional staff have been able to get a COVID-19 vaccine since January, but less than half of the more than 6,000 workers have gotten one dose of the vaccine so far. As vaccination opens up to everyone in the general public, including all incarcerated people, the department is offering staff a $500 incentive to get vaccinated.

In some ways, Logan County has been Colorado鈥檚 canary in the COVID-19 coal mine. It was home to one of the earliest, large-scale outbreaks. Then, months later, it was the first to move back on the state鈥檚 public health restriction 鈥渄ial.鈥� Now, it's one of 15 counties that have moved to the state鈥檚 new stricter, but pre-lockdown level. Area residents say living in a hotspot can be scary, stressful and divisive.

As the coronavirus continues to spread across the state, a rural corner of northeastern Colorado has become home to the highest rate of cases of any鈥�
