This week, Colorado Sun Health and Environment Reporter Michael Booth joined us to discuss a new Colorado State University study that found oil wells near Denver are releasing 142% more pollution per hour than the state average.

Colorado lawmakers have proposed a bill to study whether a type of charcoal could be used to plug deserted oil and gas wells. The hope is that putting carbon-rich biochar into defunct oil shafts will trap that carbon underground and keep it from forming carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The Biden administration is tapping $33 million from the new infrastructure law to plug and clean up at least 277 high-priority polluting wells on federal public lands in nine states. These wells are in national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges and other public lands, including the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Bureau of Land Management lands near Moab.
