The Colorado Department of Transportation and Clear Creek County Sheriff鈥檚 Office will be closing I-70 eastbound at the base of Floyd Hill during the morning hours when the intense sunshine can blind drivers.

Transportation officials say an incomplete drainage system in a construction zone along I-70 was the cause of flooding that led to the rescue of motorists near York Street in Denver.

Gov. Jared Polis said Monday he was planning to issue a state disaster declaration and it could be 鈥渁 few days to a few weeks鈥� before Glenwood Canyon can be reopened following massive mudslides that blocked Interstate 70, a major transportation corridor between the Rocky Mountains and the West Coast.

A portion of Interstate 70 in western Colorado closed by a series of mudslides near where the Grizzly Creek Fire burned last year re-opened Monday. Eastbound lanes of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon opened at 3 p.m. and westbound lanes opened about three hours later.

The 鈥淢ile High Shift鈥� is now underway. That鈥檚 what the Colorado Department of Transportation has dubbed the massive infrastructure project that will divert traffic off of the old, crumbling sections of I-70 in northeast Denver to a new, underground highway that鈥檚 been under construction for years. It鈥檚 a significant moment for Colorado鈥檚 infrastructure future. But it鈥檚 also an interesting moment for the state鈥檚 infrastructure past.

The Grizzly Creek Fire east of Glenwood Springs has burned the area near Hanging Lake. Fire officials said Friday it's not yet clear if the lake was affected, and they are waiting for the smoke to clear to assess it from the air.

Fueled by drought conditions, wildfires burning in western Colorado continue to grow in warm, windy weather.

A portion of Interstate 70 remained closed in western Colorado on Tuesday because of the Grizzly Creek Fire, which broke out along the highway the day before, forcing drivers headed across the state to take long detours through the mountains.

Portions of Interstate 70 through Colorado's mountains were shut down Friday because of heavy snow and avalanche control work as a winter storm hit the鈥�
