A million Americans get shingles every year, and many are left with pain that lasts months and years after the distinctive red rash goes away. While there's a vaccine to prevent the painful viral infection, only about 10 percent of the 50 million people who should get it actually have.

Zostavax, a vaccine against shingles, is now approved for people 50 to 59 years old. The vaccine, given in a single shot, was previously for use in people 60 years and older.
