Road to Top of Mt. Evans Closing For the Season

Although winter still seems a long way off in Colorado, the top portion of the highway up Mount Evans is closing for the season at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Colorado Highway 5 is billed as the in North America. It provides access to the top of Mount Evans, with its peak at 14,264 feet.

Each year after Labor Day, the state closes a five-mile section of the road from Summit Lake to the peak to meet an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service.

The upper portion typically reopens in late spring. The 10-mile portion between Echo Lake and Summit Lake will remain open until early October, depending on weather and driving conditions.

As the host of KUNC’s new program and podcast In the NoCo, I work closely with our producers and reporters to bring context and diverse perspectives to the important issues of the day. Northern Colorado is such a diverse and growing region, brimming with history, culture, music, education, civic engagement, and amazing outdoor recreation. I love finding the stories and voices that reflect what makes NoCo such an extraordinary place to live.
