The kicked off Thursday afternoon with horses, wagons, and a longhorn cattle drive through downtown Denver. Dubbed the “Super Bowl” of stock shows, the annual two-week event features rodeos, horse competitions, and events like sheep shearing and dog agility contests.
Organizers had considered moving the event to new facilities away from the city’s historic stockyards, which are now surrounded by homes and businesses. But despite a $100 million price tag for maintenance, the 107-year-old event is staying in Denver.
The National Western Stock Show opens Saturday, and runs through January 27th.
