The ability to customize products began with computers more than a decade ago. Now, you can create your own T-shirts, jeans, custom-blend cosmetics and candy. Even luxury brands like Burberry, Prada and Louis Vuitton now let customers design their own looks.

Crowd funding has proved popular for bands raising money to produce a new album and for producers of documentary films. Now scientists are getting into the act, and some are raising money from the very people they're studying.

Kickstarter, the crowd-funding site that pairs indie-minded entrepreneurs with online investors, funded more than 18,000 projects in 2012, according to its end-of-year analysis. The site says more than 2.2 million people pledged nearly $320 million, with 17 projects raising more than $1 million.
